Weight is the honest way to dilute. By volume, density differences shift the real strength a little; weigh if you can.
Parts to percent
Enter each material in parts (drops, grams, any unit, as long as it is the same one throughout). Get the percentage of the whole, the way a formula is written up.
Percentages are each material's parts divided by the total, times 100. They always add up to 100.
Common questions
How do I calculate a fragrance dilution?
Multiply the final amount by the target strength to get the weight of aroma material; the rest is solvent. For 10 g at 10 percent, that is 1 g of material and 9 g of solvent. Weigh by mass rather than volume for accuracy.
How do I convert a parts formula to percentages?
Add up all the parts, then divide each material's parts by that total and multiply by 100. The percentages always sum to 100, whatever unit the parts were in.
What strength should I dilute an aroma material to?
It depends on potency. Many perfumers keep powerful materials such as aldehydes or strong musks at 1 percent or 10 percent so they are easier to dose accurately; gentler materials can sit neat or higher. Dilute to whatever lets you weigh a material reliably.
